Bill Cosby is an interesting barrier for most people I know. On the one hand, you have a man, a Black man, who stands for all the pro-Black images and Black positively that forms their foundation. On the other, a man who can easily be labeled as the most notorious womanizer and rapist in recent history. The fact that his victims chose not to report his vile crime lies in the middle for them. A fact that is the result of historic victim blaming coupled with his celebrity status coupled with all the other stigmas surround sexual assault. I lie with the latter group for I do not overlook a man’s atrocities of which he has no intentions of admitting or atoning. I also will not presume these are allegations to be viewed as maybe’s.
The essence of my Blackness is that I am human and shall be treated just like any other. It is that the color of my skin or anyone who shares my hue makes us no less than anyone else. It also stems around the fact that anything that is innately defined as Black, hood, ghetto, or any other descriptive does not make that action or item inferior but of the culture of my people to make us distinct. My essence also determines that the love or participation in this culture doesn’t lessen my humanity or right to life because as stated before, I am human and shall be treated as such. Bill Cosby has violated this essence through his repeated thrashing of elements of Black culture because it doesn’t fit his design of respectable living. He is on record as to speaking down on those who exude Blackness in ways to which he doesn’t agree.
The nature of Bill’s crime against humanity is to take which was not given to him. Bill is accused of victimization via invasion without respect to the woman involved. The game he played to protect himself is the same game he used on Blackness. Bill would not be seen as criminal because he led a respectable life. He did all the right things an upstanding man should do; therefore, he could not be such a heinous person. Heinous people, by the way, were deserving of heinous outcomes. Something like a child guilty of stealing a piece of pound cake was deserving of being brutalized by the police because the child’s mama didn’t raise him right.
Bill Cosby is no one’s martyr. He is a snake oil salesman who duped Black people into thinking he’s this well meaning Black man all about the uplift of his people when in actuality he’s about the uplift of people who are like him. Heroes do come with fault for they are human. When your fault is punishable by a lifetime behind bars and your defense is to defame your accusers because you cannot say you were not involved, it doesn’t make you much of a hero.
