Raw Recap 8/22/16

We open the show to the confirmation that Seth has claimed yet another victim to the running powerbomb. This time it was the new Universal Champion. Introduced by Mick Foley and Stephanie, Balor comes down to relinquish the title to the dismay of the Universe.

Now on to the business of who's next in line for the vacated title; Seth is the first to put his name in the hat when he makes his way to the ring. Others also feel they deserve a claim to the title. Sami Zayn, Chris Jericho, Kevin Owens, Enzo & Cass, and Roman Reigns being those others. The Universe wants Slater which points to the fact that Heath Slater is as over as Long Island Ice Z at the height of his internet series. Either way, Mick announced there will be a series of matches to determine the new champion starting with Seth vs. Sami Zayn.

Sami Zayn vs. Seth Rollins

Sami is in the midst of an offensive barrage as the commercial break ends before Seth retreats outside. Back in the ring, Seth takes the upper hand at a slow methodical pace. Zayne feigns an ankle injury off a springboard. A grounded Zayn looks to land power moves like a rolling powerbomb from the top turnbuckle. Rollins finally attacks the ankle some time after the injury. Eventually, he counters into a pedigree for the pin and win.

Kevin Owens vs. Neville

The second in the series of matches features a man who wasn't even involved in the opening sequence. I'm sure there were several people who had a collective WTF moment. It doesn't take long before Jericho inserts himself into the match coming down to support his new friend. Owens ends Neville with a torture rack/neck breaker for an impressive win.

The details about the series of matches is finally clear. The winners will advance to a fatal four-way match on Raw next week.

It's celebration time as the WWE World Tag Team Champions come to celebrate their year of holding the titles. Before we could get Booty O's spilled all over the place, Anderson and Gallows comes to protest and ask for a stupid rematch.

Big E vs. Karl Anderson

Yet another match starts during the commercial break a la SmackDown. Anderson works to counter the strength of Big E by working over his left knee. Outside, Xavier runs into a big boot followed by Kofi, carrying the unicorn pinata, catches Gallows big right. They get back to their feet to neutralize the outside interference while Big E lands a big ending for the win.

Titus O'Neil came out stumbling through a promo telling us again how he's happy to be rid of Darren Young. It would have been nice if this rehashed feud had Titus as the face and Darren as the heel. Go back to the last feud to see exactly what he said just add Bob Backlund. The "We want Slater" chants were gladly welcomed then out comes Backlund.

Stephanie assures the Universe that there will be repercussions for Brock's actions at Summerslam.

Rusev vs. Big Cass

Is Lana still wearing the same dress from 2 weeks ago? Rusev is back to being the Bulgarian brute, and Lana has her Russian accent back even though Russia has nothing to do with this gimmick again. You'd think there would be more of an influence on the midcarders with this brand split, but yet here we are with the US Champ in a match to qualify for the Universal title yet again. Rusev hasn't had a long running title feud in sometime if my mind isn't tripping.

Rusev takes the fight to Cass only to have the momentum shift when the non-sawft guy goes for the champ's ribs. From the commercial break, Rusev takes the upper hand back and slides out before Cass can go on the offensive. Enzo takes a shot to the back of the head on the outside much to Cass's dismay. Rusev elects to take the L via count out rather than muster the physical assault of the certified G.

Jericho and KO can't figure out who's going to take the title in the event they're both in the title match.

Dana sounds like the dudes who sat behind us at Mania trying to start a chant with no buy in from the crowd. Foley rains on Charlotte's congratulatory speech with a division shaking announcement. The newest Raw member is....Bailey!!!! Dana got served up to the Hugger section even though she was not expecting it.

Bailey vs. Dana Brooke

Bailey brings the energy to Raw. Dana takes control after the break until Bailey hulks out in the corner. Dana works Bailey in and out the ring until she catches a Bailey to belly. Bailey takes her Raw debut match in front of the champ.

Sheamus killed the Suicide Squad movie and the NY sports teams in his promo.

Johnny Knockout vs. Braun Strowman

WWE went there with Knockout the other KO. He at least made his segment interesting before getting ran over and pinned twice. Yes pinned twice.

It's time to send to the Dudley's off in a blaze of glory on their final night. Their spot end up getting the Hardy's a pop from the Brooklyn crowd. Primo and Epico live up to their current role to be the sacrificial lambs so to speak. The Puerto Rico travel agents offer non-expenses paid trip to the shining star of the Caribbean. The Club comes down just before we can get to the business of the table service. Devon gets the honor of eating the final table in a magical way.

Chris Jericho vs. Roman Reigns

Jericho has no respect for Reigns slapping him in the face then retreating from the big man. Jericho puts in his usual work selling out for Reigns. He kicks out of a superman punch and sit out power bomb. The consummate asshole, Jericho disrespects his opponent time and time again. KO comes to offer his assistance to his friend even landing a super kick to A Man. Jericho continuously slaps Roman until he gets to his feet, lands a superman punch on KO, and then a spear to Jericho to end the match.
